Starting a direct sales Business

A home business in direct sales is THE perfect home business for someone who wants to be in business for themselves but not by themselves. This home business is also ideal for someone who does not want to create their own products , and simply just wants to market the products to others.

What's this Business All About?

As a Direct Sales Consultant, you will be selling products by hosting home parties, through catalog sales on-line or off line, and you can also build a sales team. If you are given the chance to build a downline you may be able to earn a commission of your team's sales as well.  True direct sales companies should not be confused with MLM (Multi Level Marketing) companies. MLM companies focus more on recruiting people to their business opportunity rather then building a solid team, making sales, and developing a customer base.

Starting a home business in direct sales means that you can be picky on choosing a niche and selecting a direct sales company to represent. Nowadays, there is a wide selection of direct sales companies in different niches from dog care to scrapbooking to home decor -- so it's not just cosmetics and kitchenware anymore!

start up cost?

When you join a direct sales company you will be most likely be required to purchase a start up kit. Start up kits can range anywhere from $5 to $800 and up. If you don't need to purchase a start up kit, it is highly advised that you do so. The reason you will want to do this is because if you are focusing your selling efforts via home parties (person-to-person), then eager customers will want to touch, see, and feel the actual products for themselves.

Don't be fooled by people who tell you, you can make a butt load of money JUST by purchasing a Consultant's Web page or by simply building a simple website that links to your official Consultant's homepage. True, you may be able to bring visitors to your home-made website, and then to your Consultant's website, but the sales will be far and few between because there are dozens if not thousands of duplicate Consultant's Web pages  for the company you represent. Who is to say they won't purchase from a different rep? This is why it is *key* for you to develop a good offline customer base. And, yes, you can have your customers purchase off  your website in the future.  Keep in mind, that your customers will or should not stray from your website because they have developed a *personal* relationship with you. After all, you are your customer's Consultant for the direct sales company that you represent.  So think of building a true customer base and go from there. You will find your loyal repeat customers far out weigh the first time online buyer who does not know you personally.

Also, if you are thinking why doesn't that principle apply to all online businesses; well, for one, most online businesses have a unique brand and or product. If you are selling Mary Kay cosmetics, the product is not unique in the sense there are thousands of other women selling the same thing online as well as promoting the same brand -- something to think about.

If you want a unique product and a unique brand to promote yourself, you are in the wrong line of business and you may want to start an Internet business instead of becoming a Direct Sales Consultant.
